No Handlebars

July 2, 2008 By Tom

A friend just tipped me off to a fascinating song by a Denver band called the Flobots. They’re a Gen-Y alt rock/rap group doing what alt rock does best: lamenting the state of everything. Check out the video for their hit single “No Handlebars” below. Upon an initial viewing, I thought it was very powerful, but further reflection (and viewing) has led to me think…it isn’t really as powerful as it tries to be (though it is very cool). We’re just too mediated these days to take such anarchist rantings seriously, at least not coming from pipsqueak Gen-Y American kids.

I swear, if my generation weren’t so painfully narcissistic, we might actually be capable of mustering up the energy, inspiration, and life-positive creativity to build a better machine instead of wasting our time cynically raging against the old one, following in the victimized footsteps of the Boomers and Gen-Xers like so many cloned sheep. :)
